NBTS 3RD INAUGURAL LECTURE

Theological Incongruence in Africa and the Search for a Theology Fit for the people of God

In 1974, Prof John Mbiti decried what he called the theological impotence of the church in Africa. By this, he referred to the irrelevance of much of the church’s theological formulations to the peculiarities of the African context.

Similarly in 1986, Prof Osadolor Imasogie observed the apparent “lack of fit” between Christian theology and African life, producing ambivalence in many African Christians’ response in times of existential crises.

Accordingly, in Prof John Enyinnaya’s view, the theological ineptitude bedeviling the church still persists today, five decades after the first charge was made. The church still struggles to come to terms with a theology that is appropriate for building up believers and transforming the African continent in line with the church’s mandate.

Join him on Tuesday, May 30th, as he explores this challenge and discusses what Christian theology in Africa needs to do to change the narrative. You can join in person or connect online here
