NBTS HOSTS AUGUST VISITOR

Rev. Dr. Tommy Oke

August visitors come in various shapes, shades and sizes. While some appear in pomp and pageantry, with sirens blowing and security folks following, others arrive in humility and their honour shows not in their apparel, their stature, their entourage or their paraphernalia, but in the meekness of their hearts, their humble disposition, and Christlikeness in their being and demanour. The latter was the experience of NBTS in receiving an August visitor towards the end of September, 2024.

The words used to describe an august visitor – ‘distinguished, highly regarded and respected’ all fit this special visitor who came to the Seminary. Based in Houston Texas, USA; our visitor had been encouraged by Pastor Olu Victor of Jesus House to fulfil his heart’s desire to show gratitude to God by contributing significantly to Seminary development. Recalling that one of his children was born in Frances Jones in the 1960s, he deemed it fit to play a major role in the actualization of NBTS leadership’s dream of having executive suites as an extension of Frances Jones Memorial Guest House.

So it was, that after a lot of meetings, exchange of mails and defending of proposals, the dream became a reality. Now newly roofed, the executive suites are a testimony of love for God, self-sacrifice, family unity, cooperation of Christian experts, tenacity, and much more.

Our August visitor met with the Development Committee, preached in NBTS chapel visited his family house in Ogbomoso township and also preached at Bowen University Teaching Hospital Chapel on Sunday, September 29, 2024. In his gentle manner, focusing on a Psalm among many other verses quoted; he consistently expressed thanks to God for sparing him when smuggled into America in a cargo ship. He had come to his native land to fulfil his vow of showing appreciation to God for seeing him through difficult times and lifting his head above the waters; making somebody out of a nobody.

Rev. Dr Tommy Oke is a minister of the gospel, serving as minister of discipleship in McGee Missionary Baptist Church, Houston Texas. He did not visit empty handed but also brought a token love gift to the Seminary from the church. Supported by his wife, children and family, Rev. Dr Tommy Oke has contributed substantially to NBTS. At ninety-one years of age, he is a reminder of the faithfulness of God and the fact that God always fulfils His Word. We thank God for our august visitor, Rev. Dr Tommy Oke and his supportive family represented by Pastor Olu Victor and others who were with him at various times during his stay.

Below are photographs of him with the President of NBTS, Rev. Prof. S. Ola Ayankeye; the Development Committee members with Rev. Dr Thomas Niyi-Ojo as Chairman; with Faculty of NBTS and with the Chaplain of Bowen University and his wife. We are certain of God’s blessings on him and the likes of him. May God send you August visitors that will gladden your heart also in Jesus’ name (Amen).
