AND SO IT BEGINS: THE 63RD EDITION OF THE NBTS MINISTERS CONFERENCE

Prof Ayankeye at Ministers conference

The 2023 edition of the Ministers’ Conference, the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary (NBTS) in Ogbomoso, Nigeria, commenced on September 11th 2023. This event marks the 63rd annual gathering of Baptist Ministers, and held at the NBTS Alumni Multipurpose Hall in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria, with the theme “Vessel for Honor,” drawn from 2 Timothy 2:21 (NKJV). Ministers from various parts of Nigeria and beyond had begun arriving in Ogbomoso as early as Sunday, with the conference scheduled to run from September 11th to September 14th, 2023.

The session officially began at 5:02 pm when it was declared open by Rev. Dr. Simon Ishola, the Deputy President (Academics) of the NBTS. During his conference briefing, Rev. Dr. Ishola provided valuable information about the forthcoming events, including the Retirement Service for the immediate past President of NBTS Ogbomoso, Rev. Prof. Emiola Nihinlola among other events. He also extended a warm welcome to the guests, which included the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Rev Dr. Isreal Akanji, along with other Convention staff, including Dr. Dickson Madoghwe, the Vice President Ministerial; heads of other Theological Institutions of the Nigerian Baptist Convention; Conference Presidents; Faculty members; foreign delegates (both residing in Nigeria and visiting), and visiting ministers.

The event also marked a significant moment as the Alumni association-funded Multipurpose Hall was utilized in its entirety for the first time. A dedication prayer was offered to thank God and commit the hall to His service. Dr. Dickson Madoghwe led this prayer, with support from Dr. Nkem Osigwe, President of NBTS Alumni, and the newly inaugurated Seminary President, Rev. Prof S. Ola Ayankeye.

The conference theme, “Vessel for Honor,” was highlighted through hymns such as “Have Thine Own Way Lord” and “I am Resolved,” as well as through prayers, drama, and a message. The Acting Doves presented a compelling playlet titled “Cut Off,” depicting the story of a man of God who started well but, despite several warnings, veered off course due to harmful associations, leading to an unfortunate end in his ministry. The presentation encouraged ministers to cut off strange associations, focus on the cross, and maintain their spiritual dedication to God.

The theme message was delivered by Rev. Prof. S.A. Ayankeye, drawing from Paul’s letter to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:14-26. Speaking on the topic, “Moulding of a Vessel for Honour,” the Seminary President emphasized the significance of undergoing the moulding, marring, and remoulding process in becoming a vessel for honor. Rev. Prof. Ayankeye highlighted that moulding, though challenging, is essential for personal and spiritual growth. He noted that God uses various circumstances, such as sickness, wealth, promotion, and disappointment, to mould us. Ministers have a choice to allow this moulding or otherwise. He described the marring process as a consequence of human imperfection, emphasizing the need for humility and reliance on God during this phase. The remoulding process, he explained, signifies God’s unwavering commitment to His followers’ transformation. Rev. Prof. Ayankeye also explored four scopes in which individuals must strive to be vessels of honour: the physical, social, ministerial, and spiritual scopes.

The Opening Session concluded with a prayer of consecration. Ministers in attendance, both online and onsite, prayed to God for guidance to stay on the right track and avoid derailment. The auditorium was filled with a spirit of warm fellowship, setting the stage for a remarkable week of encountering God, studying the Word of God, and being shaped into vessels of honor.

Glory be to God!
